CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK
SUPERVISING ART DIRECTOR: Getting a chance to work with Holger Gross again. He gave me my break on Stargate. Our ambitions were to not only create an aesthetic but reflect a political culture. Steeped in mysticism. A Dune-like science fiction. Many were excited to join. I believe we had the most talented concept core as we all revered Dune. Steve Burg, Tim Flattery, Matt Codd, Miles Teves, Jim Carson, Jim Martin, James Oxford the list goes on and on….
Holger took his inspiration from the church. The basilica ship and its interior were laid out as were the basilica from the classical past. The European cathedral but with a dark perspective.
One of my first ventures into specialty builds. This was made in Vancouver by a ship wright. Because of his familiarity to compound surfaces he was the obvious choice.
Many of the ships drew their influence from classical molding. Shapes were unique as the sarcophagus ship is as its name implies, based off a classical coffin. The death motif was leaned heavily upon as this was the antagonists’ gateway to the afterlife.
Miles Teves and Matt Codd took the lead on the sculptural designs and the costumes.
We built a pretty large footprint of the terminator run. Mark Mansbridge art director had a lot of influence here. He had used a similar building technique on The Matrix caves. Unbelievably this is carved Styrofoam then hard-coated. The hard-coat is the trick. Mark used truck-bed liner spray. Very durable and elastic.
